Planning menus, exploring ingredients, planning on the fly when things go wrong- creativity is an essential element of being a successful chef. A chef should be able to use ingredients in interesting and innovative ways, creating dishes that excite and tantalize, and work well together. If you know that you want a career which is varied and creatively demanding, in which you push the limits of what we consider food, then you are one step closer to being a chef.

Are you passionate about food?

Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life. If you want to become a chef, it’s important that you want it for the right reasons; you’re passionate about food and the service industry. You’ll need this passion to help get you through tough times and long hours- 18 hour days and starting out in potentially low paying jobs. In order to thrive in a cheffing career, you need to be passionate about your goal- this is not for the faint of heart.

Do you thrive in team environments?

Cheffing is not an individual path, it’s a team sport. Kitchens need to work together to be successful, so you need to be the sort of person that is uplifted by your colleagues, rather than just suffering them. Working together to produce creative brilliance is the hallmark of working as a chef.
